For centuries, preternatural creatures have held sway over the perimeters of Rome under cover and security of darkness; lycanthropes and vampires alike, each respectful of the other’s boundaries, constantly striving – despite age-old antipathy and almost instinctual distaste – to maintain the precarious balance set down by their predecessors and co-exist without petty argument or utterly unnecessary bloodshed. Ever cautious to keep their nocturnal activities hidden from the prying eyes of humans, and all too aware that man has feared and repelled that which he does not immediately understand since time immemorial. An undisturbed truce this has remained... until now.
The city’s vampire coven found themselves governed by a new Master, staunch and brutal in his belief that lycanthropes, both lupine and feline, were nothing more than unsanitary vermin – the lowest forms of life, disposable offscourings of society that needed to be exterminated with all due speed. Not simply a man of words, the Master set about his plan, ordering the slaughter of any members of the werewolf pack or wereleopard pard who strayed out of their own territories, and indeed rogues or any other denomination those filthy, mindless animals chose to inhabit in the pathetic belief that solidarity might make them stronger. Oppression without bars, tyranny without reason, and the darkest nights that the Eternal City had ever accommodated.
Roused by the despair that such ruthless culling had instilled upon their kind, the lycanthrope leaders came together and, for the first time in their histories, werewolves and wereleopards fought shoulder to shoulder in a swift, violent, and ultimately successful attempt to take down the vampiric dictator. Casualties were heavy on both sides, lives lost in a flurry of fur and blood and undead flesh until the Master’s life had finally been torn from his body. Scattered and leaderless, the coven retreated… but while the weight of persecution had finally been lifted from their shoulders, victory would still prove to be a far-remote objective for the lycanthropes.
A mere week has passed since that fateful evening, and a dense atmosphere of dread and unease hangs over Rome’s nighttime denizens. The coven will not waste time in appointing a new Master or Mistress, and revenge upon the lycans for putting down their former leader will come promptly. The Roman underworld moves to war, unlike anything the preternatural beings have ever seen before, and both lycanthropes and vampires shall, once more, be clad in the crimson cloak of dispute.
